The hope that Jack built
September 4, 2011 in Memories, Tribute
They’ve cleaned up the messages that so many had written. The flowers and other offerings have been removed. But the memories remain. The hope remains. The challenge that Jack left for us remains.
This site is dedicated to keeping that hope alive. Join us as a contributor and write your essay of hope. Leave comments. Make your voice heard. For now, email us using this link. We’ll put in a member sign up.
Give us your hopes, your dreams, your passion for a positive civic discussion. Here’s mine…
I knew Jack when he was my city councillor. He loved this city. He wanted it to be an example of how a city could work. He came to it in a different time when we had a city council that could dream of a livable city, city that I came to adopt and love.
What tribute could we possibly give to Jack Layton? We could keep that dream alive. In tribute to Jack Layton, we have donated this site, appropriately named civicspace.ca along with the hosting and technical support for this site.
My hope is that this site can be a focal point for intelligent, caring discussion about the future of our city – of Jack’s city. I hope that it can be a place where big dreams can wash away the the small minded thinking that looms large at city hall today. I hope it can be a wake up call. I hope it can be a reminder that in Toronto we are people of neighbourhoods. We are caring, thinking, loving people who are tolerant, progressive. We love our libraries, our culture and our diversity. We are committed to help those in need. We are people who know what Margaret Atwood looks like.
Help keep the dream alive. Let’s have a passionate, tolerant, loving and caring discussion of where we should go. Let’s bring together a coalition of those who remember what this city has been and dream of what it can become. If that’s not the city you know – then this site will say something to you. It will say – you don’t know Jack
